Graduate Training Programme

Every investment bank can promise challenge and responsibility to its graduates. The question is, how long might you have to wait for those doors of opportunity to open?

With RBC Capital Markets, they'll open very quickly. That's precisely because we're not the world's biggest investment bank. We're ranked in the global top 12, which means we're big enough to be a serious player in the financial markets, yet small enough to offer our people really early responsibility. There are no waiting rooms, no hiding places. If you're good enough, we'll trust your ability to dig deep and deliver the goods. It's not unknown to have 'Vice President' on your CV while still in the early stages of your career.

If you want to be in the company of exceptional people, in an exceptional company, you're looking in the right place.

A rotational programme for rounded development

Over a 17-week period, our Graduate Training Programme will give you a broad overview of capital markets. The rotational concept has been proven over time as one of our strengths, rated very highly by our graduates year after year.

Over the course of the programme you'll gain experience in sales, trading, infrastructure, debt capital markets and structuring through six areas of the business:
  • Treasury Management
  • Derivatives & Commodities
  • Fixed Income & Currencies
  • Financial Products
  • Debt Capital Markets
  • Infrastructure Finance

You will have 'on the job' training in each business area as well as e-learning and classroom-based training. This integrated programme will build not just your technical knowledge but also your soft skills and, crucially, your awareness of what other people do to make the business function as a whole. At the same time we'll support you towards passing the Financial Services Authority (FSA) regulatory exams within your first few months.

When you've completed the programme, you'll be placed in a permanent position that best matches your strengths, attributes and experience with the needs of the business, taking into consideration your own personal preferences. It's a two-way process.

What you'll need

We are not prescriptive about the subject of your degree, though we will be looking for at least a 2:1. Whether you're a philosophy student or an engineer, we're more interested in an agile intellect, strong numerical and analytical skills, an awareness of global economic issues and an interest in the workings of international financial markets. It's true that the majority of our graduates will have Business, Economics, Maths, Science or Engineering degrees, but this is by no means an exclusive club. Creativity, logic, interpersonal skills and inner drive all come into the equation. Any additional languages, especially European, are a strong advantage.

When to apply:

Applications can be made online from 1st October, 2008 (click here for more info).

Deadline for applications:

31st October 2008

INTERVIEW PROCESS

  • Numerical reasoning test
  • Interview with a member of the Human Resources department
  • An Assessment Centre (final Round) - if you make it onto our shortlist, you'll be invited to spend half a day at our offices in the City. An Assessment Centre consists of final interviews with senior management, role plays and presentations, followed by an informal event where you'll have an opportunity to meet and chat with some of our most senior people as well as recent graduate trainees. You'll quickly discover how down to earth and friendly our people are, right up to the very top. And you'll be able to look around our fabulous new offices in the heart of the City. Approximately one week after the Assessment Centre, we will inform everyone whether or not they've been offered a place on the Graduate Training Programme.
